Today,
Operation Eyesight Universal, based in Calgary, Alberta, is one of the
world's six leading organizations dedicated to sight restoration and
blindness prevention. In 1993, OEU was supporting 65 eye-care programs
in twelve countries. During that year, OEU's partners restored sight
to 113,885 people and provided general eye care to another 1,826,245.
The
man who founded this highly respected organization is Art Jenkyns of
Calgary. A family man and businessman with a lifelong involvement in
the Scouting movement, he had no intention originally of touching the
lives of countless people overseas. But he did.
Destiny
chose him for that role. His own qualities - determination, enthusiasm,
integrity and leadership ability -- first exercised as the young Scout
leader of the Flaming Arrow patrol, helped him to fulfil that destiny.
Art
Jenkyns has received fifteen awards and honors, including the Order
of Canada, the Alberta Award of Excellence and Honorary Doctor of Laws
from the University of Calgary. But his greatest reward by far has been
his role in giving sight to the blind.
This
is the story of the Flaming Arrow and of the club that he and a group
of other business men started in a church basement more than thirty
years ago. Together, man and organization became the gift of sight to
millions of people around the world.
